Ben Liney
About Me I’m Ben Liney (b. 1983), a self-taught landscape painter based on Bunurong land (Altona, Victoria). My practice centres on oil painting, developed from my own photographic explorations of the landscape. I create detailed, intimate studies of moss-covered rock formations and geological forms—using light, texture, and atmosphere to evoke themes of time, memory, and stillness.

Art Career After working in design and the non-profit community sector, I began painting professionally in 2021. I was represented by Gallery Raye (2021–2023), then Sketch Co (2023) until their closure. Since 2024, I’ve been represented by Traffic Jam Galleries (Sydney).
Highlights include:
- Finalist in the 2025 Omnia Art Prize (2x works).
- Exhibiting with Traffic Jam Galleries at AAF Singapore and upcoming Hong Kong (May 2025).
- Exhibitor at The Other Art Fair Melbourne 2025.
- Top-selling artist with Sketch Co at the 2023 Affordable Art Fair Melbourne, where I also exhibited as a live artist.
- Solo shows with Sketch Co and Traffic Jam Galleries.
- Group exhibitions across several galleries.
- Multiple works sold via Artbid.
- Completed 4 private commissions to date.
- Formed a collective and submitted an application to exhibit at AAF Melbourne 2025.
Art Practice I work in a realist style to depict geological forms with restrained observation—often isolating them from their surroundings to draw attention to a story of time and memory.
I’m interested in creating semi-abstracted scenes that encourage an attentive way of seeing the natural world—mirroring the landscape’s quiet persistence and opening space for reflection on our connection to place.
